Charlestown Athletic FC on tour
Charlestown Athletic FC travelled to Kinlough on the Leitrim / Donegal border on Saturday and Sunday July 2nd and 3rd to take part in the Melvin Celtic FC 7-a-side tournament. On Saturday the under 8’s and under 10’s took part in the competition.
The under 8’s won out their competition in style bearing in mind that it was their first ever tournament. Dylan Craig showed that he was going to be an up and coming striker having notched up a total of sixteen goals in the competition. Shane Flemming also scored a number of goals as he also gave some wonderful displays. Keelan Horkan in goals was outstanding. Kieran Murphy, Aidan Hopkins, Darren Healy, Thomas Kelly, Shane Tarpey and Ryan Duffy all gave hardworking and promising performances, all of which combined expertly throughout the tournament to win it comprehensively.
Team: Keelan Horkan, Dylan Craig, Kieran Murphy, Aidan Hopkins, Darren Healy, Shane Flamming, Shane Tarpey, Ryan Duffy,
The under 10’s also produced some excellent football. As many of last season’s squad progressed up to under 11 football this was effectively a total new team.
Their first game was against Melvin Celtic greens, despite wonderful performances from Nigel Cassidy, Kiefer Curry and Conor Forkin, Charlestown were defeated by 3-1. The second round game was against the eventual tournament winners, Ballisodare United, Charlestown gave them a good game although United won 5-1. Melvin Celtic reds were the next opposition, goalkeeper Sean Tarpey produced some great saves while Patrick Kenny, Colm Flannery and Aaron Parsons were causing all sorts of problems for the opposition. Charlestown were becoming stronger as the games progressed as they got to grasp with the pace of the games, and they earned their first win against Melvin Celtic on a scoreline of 6-0.Their fourth group game was against Yeats United. Further outstanding displays from Ryan Kelly, Conor Henry and Bobby Haran combining with excellent goalkeeping from Sean Tarpey saw Charlestown beat Yeats Utd 4-0. The final group game was against Manor Rangers, Sean Tarpey was again on form as was Nigel Cassidy, Kiefer Curry and Conor Henry, this game was an extremely close game as both sides defended well, thus scoring chances were limited, this was reflected in the final score of 1-1. Ballisodare United were the team to beat in the semi-final, they came through the group stages unbeaten and they obviously were a well settled squad. Despite Charlestown’s best efforts Ballisodare were too strong for them as they progressed into the final on a scoreline of 4-0. Ballisodare went on to win the under 10 competition.
Team: Sean Tarpey, Nigel Cassidy, Kiefer Curry, Conor Henry, Aaron Parsons, Patrick Kenny, Ryan Kelly, Bobby Haran, Conor Forkin, Colm Flannery.
Sunday saw the participation of the Charlestown Athletic under 12 and under 14 teams. First up were the 12’s with their first match against Melvin Celtic greens, this was an extremely close encounter as Charlestown tried to settle into the momentum of the 7-a-side game. With excellent defending from both sides, opportunities were limited and resulted in a full-time score of 0-0. The second game in this 5-minute a side competition saw the pairing of Charlestown and Melvin Celtic reds. Charlestown began to settle into their form quite quickly and was gaining a lot of the ball, unfortunately this was not being converted into goals. Gareth O’Donnell as usual displayed great skill in goals, which as always is an inspiration to the team, Michael Corrigan forced on to the bench for most of the tournament following a slight injury picked up on the previous Friday in a league game against Snugboro, was introduced in the last two minutes of this game, combined play from Martin Owens and Stephen Mc Intyre landed the ball into Corrigan who in the dying moments of the game blasted it into the Melvin Celtic net. Final- score 1-0 to Athletic.
The third group game was against Copany Rovers, again another tight game was in store. Again it was defenders Martin Owens, Gary Cassidy and Sean Walsh who were outstanding. Michael Spencer was the creative player in this game and was unlucky on several occasions not to have put Charlestown ahead, Copany defended extremely well and never allowed an opportunity to break, as in the last game Michael Corrigan was introduced, and again he scored the winner in the dying moments of the game leaving it 1-0 at the end. East United were the next opponents for Charlestown, Sean Quinn and Gerard Mc Loughlin ran the length and breadth of the pitch during this game, Quinn was unlucky not to have broken the deadlock midway through the first – half, as was Michael Spencer. Continuing the sequence Michael Corrigan, introduced midway through the last five minutes scored the only goal of the game, the winner for Charlestown. The final group game was against Cliffoney-Grange, and what a thrilling game this turned out to be, Kiefer Craig was outstanding in this game, his long throws had players and spectators in awe, each one resulted in an attempt at goal and it was Martin Owens at the end of one that put Charlestown into the lead, Kiefer Craig added a second soon after while Cliffoney pulled one back, Michael Corrigan scored the final one of the game, giving Charlestown a 3-1 win which saw them top the qualifying group. The semi-final was against Melvin Celtic greens, Charlestown at this stage were unstoppable, Sean Quinn and Gary Cassidy were the scorers in this match sending Charlestown into the final against Melvin Celtic reds. This final game was exciting , Captain Gareth O’Donnell led the team through an extremely tight battle which saw it 0-0 after normal time. With 3-minutes a side extra time nothing changed, it was still a very close nervous game, with penalties looming it was not until the final minute of the game when a long pass from Sean Quinn was met by Michael Corrigan who in turn drilled it into the back of the net. The final score was 1-0.
Team: Gareth O’Donnell, Martin Owens, Gary Cassidy, Sean Walsh, Sean Quinn, Michael Spencer, Kiefer Craig, Gerard Mc Loughlin, Stephen Mc Intyre. Michael Corrigan.
Charlestown Athletic under 14’s began their competition against Cliffoney-Grange. Man of the match Paul Warde was inspiring for Charlestown, his mid-field partnership with Shane Gallagher was causing the opponents all sorts of trouble, goalkeeper Darragh Redmond made some fantastic saves, which was a motivation to the whole team. Brendan Parsons was the lone scorer of the game, his excellent strike resulted in a 1-0 win for Charlestown.
Erne Youths were next up, Sean Mulvaney and James Peyton were brilliant as usual in defence, alongside Colin Kenny, there was no easy way through for Erne. However, in a rare mix up, Erne did take the lead for a short time in the game but this was until an excellent strike from a distance swa Paul Warde equalise the game, which ended 1-1. Tournament favourites East Utd the next opposition to Charlestown in the Quarter finals. Sean Mulvaney was outstanding in his tight marking of their danger man, this led to them becoming more and more frustrated as the game progresses, giving Charlestown the advantage, Darragh Redmond again made some great saves, Conor Finn combined with Shane Gallagher and Paul Warde were working extremely hard in creating opportunities for Brendan Parsons up front and it was not long until the breakthrough came for Parsons as he followed up on a deflection to blast it into the back of the net. As the minutes ticked away the whole team maintained their work rate and composure to defend their goal advantage, to which they did successfully. Unfortunately, their exertions in the game against East Utd became evident in the Semi-final game against Melvin Celtic, although they maintained the game scoreless, Melvin Celtic opened the scoring and as Charlestown sought an equaliser, Celtic hit back in a short space of time with two goals. It was a great performance by the under 14’s in this competition, particularly against the quality of the teams they came up against and bearing in mind that the team they had beaten in the first game, Cliffoney-Grange won out the competition against Melvin Celtic 1-0.
CHARLESTOWN ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB WAS FOUNDED IN 1990, AND AFTER A PERIOD OF TWO YEARS AFTER HAVING TRIED THE EXPERIENCE OF RENTING GROUNDS OUTSIDE THE TOWN - DOHERTY'S FIELD IN TAMPLE,BURKE'S FIELD IN CURRY AND A PITCH IN LOWPARK AT THE BACK OF FR. O'HARA PARK,CHARLESTOWN ATHLETIC YOUTHS DECIDED AT THAT STAGE TO PURCHASE A GROUND, THE JUNIOR TEAM WERE INVITED TO COME ON BOARD TO ASSIST IN ITS PURCHASE.
THE PITCH WAS FINALLY PURCHASED IN 1992 WITH THE MONIES OF JOHNNY FINN,BARRY MALONEY,JIMMY MARREN AND JOHN TOWEY R.I.P.A COMMITTEE WAS FORMED, WHICH AT THE TIME WAS LARGELY DRAWN FROM THE YOUTHS AND JUNIOR TEAMS TO HELP REPAY THE LOAN AND DEVELOP THE GROUND TO WHAT IT IS TODAY. JUST LIKE THE 'FOGGY BOGGY' AIRPORT IN KNOCK WHICH HAS PROVED THE CRITICS WRONG,THE SAME WAS SAID OF THE CLUB'S PURCHASE BY SOME LOCALS WHO SAID 'YOU CANNOT TURN A SWAMP IN TO A PITCH', AND 'YOU WILL NEVER SEE FOOTBALL PLAYED THERE', THESE REMARKS HAVE ALL SINCE BEEN PROVED WRONG.
WITH THE AID OF A 'TEN POUND LIMITED TICKET DRAW' THE LOAN WAS ALMOST RE-PAID TO JOHNNY,BARRY,JIMMY AND JOHN,IT NECESSITATED IN THE FUNDS OF THE SOCCER CLUB'S MAYORAL CANIDATE JOE MAHON, ASSISTING IN THE PAYMENT OF THE PITCH AND HAVING SURPLUS FUNDS TO HELP DEVELOP THE PITCH. AT THIS STAGE THE SOCCER CLUB HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN NUMEROUS FUNDRAISERS, E.G. FOOTBALL POOLS BY JOHNNY FINN, JOE MC NICHOLAS AND DONAL HEALY, THE TEN POUND DRAW BY CHARLESTOWN HOLDINGS, DARTS NIGHTS ORGANISED BY PAT CAULFIELD AND THE MAYORAL CAMPAIGN ORGAINSED BY THE ' CHARLESTOWN WESTERN ROSE' COMMITTEE.
TO SAFE GUARD THE VENTURE THE ' HOLDINGS COMPANY' WAS FORMED AND REGISTERED ON JUNE 8TH 1992 WITH THE FOLLOWING SHAREHOLDERS - JOHN TOWEY,PADRAIC KENNEDY,KEVIN MALONEY,PHILIP O'GORMAN,BARRY MALONEY,VALENTINE LENEGHAN,JOE MAHON,JOHNNY FINN,JIMMY MARREN AND JOE MC NICHOLAS.THE COMPANY HAD A 'MEMORANDUM AD ARTICLES OF ASSOCIATION' COMPILED BY MICHAEL COSGROVE AND PARTNERS, CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS, TO SAFE GUARD THE COMPANY'S INTERESTS AT ALL TIMES AND LIKE A CONSTITUTION OF A COUNTRY OUTLIVES ITS MEMBERS BUT ENSURES THE CONTINUATION OF COMPANY POLICY AND MANDATE.
A HUGE STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT WAS UNDERTAKEN BY THE HOLDINGS COMPANY AND WITH THE GOOD WILL OF JOE MAHON WHO HAD MACHINERY ON SITE AND ALSO MACHINERY HIRED BY THE COMPANY, THE DRAINAGE OF THE PITCH COMMENCED UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF JOHN TOWEY. OTHER DONATIONS GIVEN AT THE TIME WERE FROM FRANK HARRINGTON (20 TONNES OF CHIPPING) AND THE DONATION OF TIME FROM JOHN PARSONS IN SURVEYING THE JOB ON HAND AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS WHO ASSISTED.TO HELP KEEP THE WORK PROGRESSING, SIX INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS LENT THE HOLDINGS COMPANY MONIES SO WORK COULD CONTINUE. FINAL 30TH JULY 2000
CHARLESTOWN ATHLETIC FC 4
BALLYHEANE 0
Charlestown Athletic FC ran out easy winners of the Westaro Cup final played at Milebush against an injury hit Ballyheane side.Enda Casey opened the scoring on 23 minutes when dermot higgins easily beat Joe Redmond in the centre.Higgins turned provider for Casey whose right boot volley gave Sean Fahey no chance.Ballyheane had an opportunity to grab the equaliser but were denied by the alert and astute Charlestown goalkeeper Neil O'Connor, another opportunity Ballyheane had before the half-time interval was from aBrian Donnelly free-kick that looked goal bound but harmlessly sailed wide.Charlestown, in the scond hal;f took the game, following a couple of half chances Jonathan Caulfield broke up the left wing, and cut the ball inside to Aiden Higgins. His first touch was super, marginally knocking it ahead. One step further and he let fly with a daisy cutter leaving Fahey sitting on his rear. This saw the Ballyheane become dejected, they attempted a response when Joe Redmond broke loose down the right flank and found Kieran Lally outside the box,his chip was a frail attempt and was no threat to the Charlestown keeper. The contest was sealed through the opportunism of substitute Colm Horkan. From a throw-in Donal hely put pressure on the Ballyheane goal, the defence effecting something of a half clearance.Reacting faster than anyone else,Horkan outpaced the Ballyheane keeper who found himself in no man's land, and slided the ball into an empty net. From then the 73rd minute, virtually everyone was waiting for the final whistle except Charlestown substitute Ollie Conway. One of the outstanding players on the day Aiden Higgins, set up a lively Conway to put the final nail in the Ballyheane game coffin.Charlestown proved through every player in Milebush, that when at full strength, they are the best side in the County.TEAM: Neil O'Connor,Paul Mulligan,Fergus Marren,Kevin Duignan(Captain),Padraig Horkan,Jonathan Caulfield,Donal Healy,Aiden Higgins,Enda Casey,Ollie Conway,Andrew Callaghan,Kieran O'Connell,Sean Leneghan,Colm Horkan.

TEMPLE UNITED 2
CHARLESTOWN ATHLETIC FC 2
TEMPLE UNITED WON 5-3 ON PENALTIES
And so it all came to an end on a windy sunday afternoon in cork when Charlestown's glorious run to the last eight in Ireland was halted in that cruelest of fashions: the dreaded penalty shoot-out.Just three minutes of normal time remained and Charlestown were protecting their 2-1 advantage when the Temple player James Callis, poached a most unlikely equaliser. It was such a harrowing blow for Charlestown who did so well to maintain their composure in extra-time and force the game into penalties in which Temple converted all their spot-kicks. the home team would not have argued had Charlestown went home with the spoils. They overcame the shock of conceding a goal after three minutes to bounce back with the quality of football that they have been displaying all season. But they were cursing their luck.Chances were created and not taken. The Temple 'keeper,Martin O'Mahony, also denied Charlestown with saves of the highest quality. However, the biggest blow to Charlestown came when they lost their own goalkeeper,Paddy Brehony, with a serious leg injury after 70 minutes. After the early concession Charlestown went on to dominate the rest of the half,Team captain,Enda Casey, was marvellous alongside the imperious Brendan Towey in midfield with his tackling and passing.Either side of him Alan Mulligan and Padraig Horkan probed throughout while the back four of Trevor Maloney,Kevin Duignan,Stephen Costello and Fergus Marren were all magnificent.Up front Brian O'Connell and Matt Kilroy never let the home defence settle and the latter scored a marvellous secong goal from a free-kick.For all their dominance Charlestown had to wait until the last moments of the first half for the equaliser.A superb volleyed effort from Towey was at the root of it.His effort, which looked to be going inside the post, was tipped away for a corner by O'Mahony and from the resultant dead-ball Enda Casey rose highest to head home the leveller.Despite playing into the wind in the second half it was Charlestown who played all the football.Marren and Duignan controlled the defence and Casey and Towey were the playmakers in midfield. It was against such a background that Charlestown took the lead on 63 minutes.Temple United conceded a free-kick outside their own penalty area and Matt Kilroy curled it beautifully over the wall and just under the cross-bar.It was a marvellous moment and was just reward for the Charlestown effort. There were further chances for the away side to increase their lead and they were made pay three minutes from time when Collind equalised.Extra time produced no further goals and it took a penalty shoot out to decide the game.Stephen Costello,Fergus Marren and Padraig horkan converted three of the Charlestown kicks but the important penalty was scored by Alan O'Brien for Temple.TEAM:Paddy Brehony,Trevor Maloney,Fergus Marren,Kevin Duignan,Stephen Costello,Alan Mulligan,Brendan Towey,Enda Casey,Padraig Horkan,Brian O'Connell,Matt Kilroy,Stephen Finn

3RD ROUND 16-1-1999
CHARLESTOWN ATHLETIC 2
FINN HARPS 1
AFTER EXTRA TIME AT BELLAGHY PARK
Charlestown Athletic's capacity for upsetting the odds appears to have boundless when they defeated National League side Finn Harps in the third round replay of the FAI Youth CupThe East-Mayo side, which lost a two-goal l;ead in the closing stages of the drawn tie at Ballybofet five weeks earlier, made no mistakes the second time round on their home patch, despite playing to their full potential. They were forced to come from behind before completing one of the most famous victories in the club's history.Although Charlestown's win was achieved on team effort, three players exercised particularly influential roles,Kevin duignan, converted from a full-back to central defensive role, did a tremendous job in keeping Harp's front man JP Gallagher, under wraps.More inmportantly,he executed the winning goal two minutes into the second period of extra time.Enda Casey a strong running midfielder, spearheaded the Charlestown revival with the side's equalising goal, while goalkeeper Paddy Brehony produced a critical save in the dying moments of normal time.Charlestown will now play Inishowen League side,Fanad United,in the next round of the series at Bellaghy on saturday Februaru 6th.But things had not looked good for the home side when Harps,a semi-professional outfit, appeared poised to take command of the match in the 69th minute when they broke the deadlock following a spell of torrid pressure.Charlestown goalkeeper Paddy Brehony failed to hold a cross from the left by Spephen O'Donnell, and Gavin Mackey reacted swiftest of all to direct the ball into the net.But the setback stung Charlestown, backed by a vociferous local crowd, into action.Powerful central defender Fergus Marren went close to snatching an equaliser in an almighty goalmouth scramble which resulted in him sustaining an injury.Enda Casey, becoming more prominent as the game wore on,was denied by goalkeeper Gavin Cullen following a brilliant cross by the pacey Brian O'Connell.Charlestown were rewarded for their patience and perseverance with five minutes remaining when Casey powered an expertly delivered Kevin Duignan cross into the Harps netThere was an anxious moment for Charlestown just before the end of normal time when harps attacker JP Gallagher struck an outstanding headed effort on target. But Charlestown goalkeeper Brehony made glorious amends for his earlier mistake by palming the ball spectacularly over the cross bar.Charlestown's match-winning goal, scored in the second period of extra time, will live long in the memory of those that had the pleasure of witnessing it.Centre-half Kevin Duignan unleashed a stunning drive from 25 yards which left the Harps goalkeeper with no chance and had the Charlestown supporters dancing on the sidelines.Great credit must go to the three substitutes Trevor Maloney,Martin Taylor and Paul Mulligan, who made an immediate impact when introduced to a heavy pitch. The result represented a tremendous boost for youth football in Mayo, and hopes are high of charlestown advancin further in the competition.TEAM: P Brehony,A Callaghan,K Duignan,F Marren,S Costello,E Casey,P Horkan,M Kilroy,B Towey,A Mulligan,B O'Connell,T Maloney,P Mulligan,M Taylor.
